Two Italian impressionists

I first came across Giovanni Boldini in 2016. I was visiting Ferrara and discovered an exhibition of his works at the castle. I was “blown away” by his fluid and exciting style of painting, and so happy to have discovered an impressionist that I had never heard of before.

Giovanni Boldini (1842 -1931)

Giovanni Boldini was born in Ferrara, Italy, in December 1842. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. He then moved to London where he became a very successful and accomplished portrait painter, painting portraits of members of the English high society. In 1872 he moved to Paris where he worked for most of his career. As a portrait painter he was very sought after, and called upon to do portraits of all the grande dames of Paris. He became great friends with Edgar Degas

.

He was awarded the Legion d’Honneur by the French Government for his part in the Paris Exposition of 1889. As a Commissioner, he was responsible for the Italian section of this exposition. In 1897 he had a solo exhibition in New York, and also participated regularly in the Venice Biennale.

Giovanni Boldini died in Paris on 11 January 1931 and is buried in Ferrara.

Studio` all’Accademia di Belle Arti a Firenze.

Giuseppe De Nittis (1846 – 1884)

I have since come across another Italian impressionist artist, Giuseppe De Nittis. His paintings are just as good, in fact they are exceptional. If you happen to be in America in February, there is an exhibition of his works on in Washington. It is being hosted by the Phillips Collection and finishes on 12 February 2023
