Puccini … un genio italiano …  

Giacomo Puccini era toscano … nacque a Lucca il 22 dicembre 1858.  Aveva 8 tra fratelli e sorelle … una famiglia numerosa per gli standard di oggi, ma forse normale per quei giorni.  Il padre morì quando lui aveva solo 5 anni. Fu mandato a studiare presso lo zio materno e poi ricevette una borsa di studio e, dal 1880 al 1883, studiò al Conservatorio di Milano. Cominciò a comporre le opere e iniziò anche un rapporto sentimentale, una convivenza, con Elvira Bonturi, destinata a durare, anche se un po’ burrascosa, tutta la sua vita. Lei era già sposata e lui ebbe altri rapporti.
Nel 1891, Puccini si trasferì a Torre del Lago perché amava la campagna, la vita rustica, e la caccia. Prese in affitto una vecchia casa e qui furono composte alcune delle sue opere più famose, come la Manon Lescaut, la Bohème, la Tosca, la Madame Butterfly e La Turandot. Tutte hanno bellissime arie, ma credo che quella più bella sia Nessun dorma  della Turandot .

La Turandot è ambientata in Cina. La storia è complicata, una fantasia. Turandot è una bellissima principessa dal cuore di ghiaccio. Molti principi la amano e vorrebbero sposarla ma lei li rifiuta, e  sottopone tutti ad una prova terribile e se non risolvono tre enigmi difficilissimi, il boia taglia loro le teste. 
Ma poi Calaf, un straniero bello, arriva e indovina tutti  e tre gli enigmi. Turandot, però, non vuole sposarlo e, quindi, lui, a sua volta, le assegna un compito … se lei indovina il suo nome entro il mattino seguente, potrà ucciderlo. Però Turandot non riesce ad indovinare, ma Calaf, per amore, glielo revela. Allora la principessa si innamora di Calaf, che è in realta un principe persiano. “Ho scoperto il suo nome”, dice Turandot …”è amore”.

Puccini mori’ a Bruxelles nel 1924 per un tumore alla gola.

Giacomo Puccini was Tuscan … He was born in Lucca on 22 December 1858. He had 8 siblings … an enormous family by today’s standards, but perhaps quite normal for those times. His father died when he was only 5 years old and he was sent to study with his maternal uncle. He was awarded a bursary, and between 1880 and 1883 studied at the Milan Conservatory. He began to compose operas around this time and also started a relationship with Elvira Bonturi. Although somewhat stormy, it was destined to last his whole life … she was married and he had other romantic liaisons. 
In 1891, Puccini moved to Torre del Lago because he loved the country and hunting. He rented an old house and here he composed some of his most famous works like Manon Lescaut,  Bohème, Tosca, Madame Butterfly and Turandot. All of them have beautiful arias, but perhaps the most beautiful is Nessun dorma from Turandot. 
Turandot is set in China. The story is complicated and fantastical. Turandot is a beautiful princess with a heart of ice. Many princes love her and want to marry her, but she refuses them and sets them all a terrible task … if they do not solve three very difficult puzzles, the executioner will cut off their heads. Then Calaf, a handsome stranger, arrives and guesses all three puzzles. Turandot, however, does not want to marry him, and so he, in turn, sets her a task … if she guesses his name by the next morning, she can kill him. Turandot, however, is not able to guess, but Calaf, out of love, reveals it to her. Then the princess falls in love with Calaf, who is actually a Persian prince. “I have discovered his name”, she says … “it is love”. 

Puccini died in Brussels from a throat tumour in 1924.
